The irregularities of the teeth and jaw are treated and prevented with the application of braces, which are fixed dental devices, and retainers, which are removable dental devices. In recent times, there are many types of braces available to straighten the teeth, close the unsightly gaps between teeth, and rectify an irregular bite. It must be remembered that teeth which don’t fit properly are harder to clean and they present high chances of bacterial accumulation, periodontal disease, and tooth decay.

Types Of Braces

Traditional Braces

These braces consist of elastic bands, brackets, and an arch wire. The brackets work as anchors and are bonded to the front area of the teeth. Arch wires are placed on the teeth through the brackets while the elastic bands keep them in place. The tension on the teeth is increased by the tightening of the arch wire. This tension moves and aligns the teeth into proper position. The braces are adjusted every four to six weeks to achieve the desired alignment. The complete teeth alignment can be obtained in about one to three years.

After the removal of braces, the patients are made to wear removable retainers on the areas where the braces were placed. These retainers keep the teeth in their rectified position and they must be worn for at least one year to ensure optimum results.

Damon Braces

Damon braces possess self-ligating mechanism. With damon braces, there’s no use of elastic bands for the attachment of the brackets to the arch wire. Instead, there’s a built-in slide mechanism. This slide mechanism allows free movement of the teeth, which significantly reduces the total treatment time. These braces also have a greater aesthetic appeal, as the brackets are not as noticeable as in the case of metal braces.

Lingual Braces

These braces are also called invisible braces. This is because they are applied on the interior side of the teeth. These braces are perfect for those individuals who desire a brace-free smile. These braces also apply persistent soft pressure on the teeth to shift them into proper alignment. Our Indianapolis orthodontists and dentists are experts in the application of all types of braces.
